The Mesothelioma Veterans Center (USA)

“The Mesothelioma Veterans Center provides free support to USA Veterans who are diagnosed with cancer. The center was founded by Navy Veteran LCDR Carl Jewett and everything they do is to find relief for USA vets. The team walks veterans through the whole process of finding relief because they have they got this disease usually from serving in the Military and coming into contact with asbestos.

They provide information and assistance to vets regarding treatment, clinical trials, and VA benefits for all of their veterans. Because veterans comprise the single largest group of Americans diagnosed with mesothelioma and asbestos lung cancers each year, they are the most affected, yet their needs are the most underserved.

There are many benefits available to veterans, which many overlook.  The Center envisions a day when they are able to ensure that every veteran diagnosed with mesothelioma or asbestos lung cancer is able to get the best medical treatment available, and that they receive any and all VA benefits for which they are eligible.

Mesothelioma is a cancer of the lining of the lungs or abdomen that is caused by exposure to asbestos. In over 30% of all mesothelioma cases, asbestos exposure happened during military service. Veterans from all branches of service are at risk, with the most common being the United States Navy and the Marines. There are a variety of mesothelioma treatments available, as well as doctors in the VA system who are capable of treating it.

The military used asbestos until the late-1970s to make certain materials fireproof and heat-resistant. Asbestos materials weren’t fully replaced until decades later, leaving many veterans at risk for developing mesothelioma later in life.

Veterans suffering from mesothelioma caused by exposure to asbestos during military service are eligible for VA benefits. Many mesothelioma patients are entitled to compensation as a result of developing the disease. Vets can be compensated through legal settlements, VA claims, bankruptcy trust funds and jury verdicts. The amount of compensation Vets receive can be based on several factors, including the amount of wages They can no longer obtain, the degree of emotional distress They have and the cost of  funerals. Vets may receive different amounts of compensation depending on an individual’s situation.

Vets can receive anything from just a little bit of money to millions of dollars from the company or the government that was ultimately responsible for the sickness. Each case is unique and it cannot be predicted how much money Vets will receive, or if an individual Vet is entitled to any money at all.

For the best chance of compensation, seek the advice of an attorney who understands the complexity of mesothelioma and asbestos exposure, and has worked with mesothelioma compensation in the past.”
